Snorkel John Pennekamp: Two-Shallow-Reef Tour on a 51' Catamaran

The Experience

Before You Go

Arrive early to check waivers

Complete the digital snorkel release waiver before arrival and arrive at Silent World early to secure parking and a locker if needed.

Use provided reef-safe sunscreen

The operator supplies reef-safe sunscreen—reapply before entering the water to protect coral and prolong comfort in sun and salt.

Practice ladder re-entry

Be prepared to climb a narrow swim ladder from the water; practice a step-and-pull technique and ask crew for assistance if necessary.

Protect the reef with buoyancy control

Float feet-up and avoid kneeling or touching the coral; a snorkeling vest helps maintain safe distance for novices.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Paddle around the park’s mangrove channels at high tide for birdwatching and juvenile fish nurseries
  • Walk the small trail at the park entrance to spot hermit crabs and wading birds before boarding

Wildlife

  • Green sea turtle
  • Southern stingray

Conservation Note

The park enforces mooring buoy systems and bans anchoring to protect coral; visitors are urged to use reef-safe sunscreen and avoid touching marine life.

Key Largo developed from 19th-century wrecking and sponge industries into a mid-20th-century dive destination; Pennekamp was established to protect reefs and formalize moorings.
